Dear
Parents,
Every
once in a while, all of the stars and planets
align and you have an amazing moment in a
school. We at Eliot Montessori had one of those
teachable moments last week during our All
School Assembly. Two months ago, a young woman,
Sally King, emailed me about wanting to bring
her acappella singing group, The Ursa Minors, to
Eliot to perform for the children. Sally was a
second year student in 1992 at Eliot and will
graduate from Brown University in Providence,
R.I. this month. After Eliot, Sally went to the
Fay School, St. Mark’s, and then to Brown. She
wanted to sing for the children because she felt
that Eliot had the largest impact on her
education and, in the end, her life

thus
far. She is an Art History major at Brown and
plans to start working
at the Metropolitan Museum in New York City this
summer.
The
women from Brown arrived just before the All
School Assembly started and warmed up with some
singing exercises. One member of the Ursa Minors
found out that she was accepted to Harvard Law
School during their warm up.
Ah, the wonder of cell phones. Watching
our Eliot students, especially the girls in the
room, was just great. Eliot students were
swaying with the singing group, mouthing the
words and were completely absorbed.
Nothing beats positive role models for
our kids and this was an inspiring day for those
of us able to be there. Brown

recently released information on it's freshman
class for next year. They rejected 85% of their
applicants; 52% of next year’s class will be
women.
The
music was great, the fact that Eliot made such a
positive impact on Sally is wonderful, and the
celebration of reunion was magical – a
teachable moment for sure. My hope is that
events like this will start conversations at
your dinner table. We wish the best for Sally
and for all who have been part of the Eliot
Montessori School, past, present and future!
Sincerely
yours,
Bill
O’Hearn,
Head of
